About Cantonese Class Today
Cantonese Class Today, is an initiative by Jay Tang, a visual designer, photographer, visual artist who became a Cantonese teacher. He started teaching Cantonese to adults at the local Chinese school in Amsterdam in 2019, the same school he learned Chinese when he was young.
In late 2023 he started his social media channel Cantonese Class Today on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and Youtube, with the intent to produce more Cantonese content for language learners and heritage speakers across the world. He is also working on his first Cantonese teaching book, scheduled to be released in late 2025. Stay up dated about the book below.
Currently, he only teaches in person at the Chinese school in Amsterdam, and occassionally he does one-on-one courses via the Super Prof platform. In the future, he hopes to broaden his reach and offer more opportunities to learn Cantonese through an e-learning concept, though it’s still in very early concept stages!

Work in progress: Cantonese Teaching Book《Cantonese: From none to done》!
I’m currently working on writing my first Cantonese teaching book, tentatively titled《Cantonese: From none to done》. It is based on how I have been teaching my Cantonese class for adults for the past couple of years. My students start at varying levels of Cantonese, from zero knowledge to basic and end up getting a grasp of the language.
My intend is to compile this teaching method into a comprehensive, yet an easy-to-read and to understand book aimed at adolescents and adults.
Things I cover in this book include:
- The Jyutping Romanisation Scheme
- The tones of Cantonese
- The pronunciation of Cantonese using Jyutping
- Basic sentence structures
- How to ask questions
- How to make more complex sentences
- Differences between Standard Written Chinese and Spoken Cantonese
- Learn practical and expanded vocabulary through short stories
- Conversation games to play with a group or your language partner
