一齊過嚟學講廣東話啦!

Let's learn to speak Cantonese together!

Why did I start Cantonese Class Today?

Learning Cantonese ain’t easy. Being a Cantonese heritage speaker myself, I have gone through the hardships growing up. I went to the Chinese school every Saturday, because my parents told me to. I didn’t like it, especially the home work, but you did get to meet some friends. Some of them became friends for life even. I started getting interesting in honing my Chinese in my teens when I had an interest in HKpop, karaoke and reading manga in Chinese.

Now, I’m a father of three and became a teacher at the same school I went to. Who would have thought? Becoming a parent, makes you realise how much you want to pass on your culture and language to the next generation. It’s certainly a challenge. While there’s plenty of learning material for young children, there seems to be a lack of intermediate learning material for adolescents and adults. So that’s why I decided to start Cantonese Class Today, an initiative to produce more Cantonese learning material for Cantonese heritage speakers and learners around the world.

Work in progress: Cantonese Teaching Book《Cantonese: From none to done》!

I’m currently working on writing my first Cantonese teaching book, tentatively titled《Cantonese: From none to done》. It is based on how I have been teaching my Cantonese class for adults for the past couple of years. My students start at varying levels of Cantonese, from zero knowledge to basic and end up getting a grasp of the language.

My intend is to compile this teaching method into a comprehensive, yet an easy-to-read and to understand book aimed at adolescents and adults

Things I cover in this book include:

  • The Jyutping Romanisation Scheme
  • The tones of Cantonese
  • The pronunciation of Cantonese using Jyutping
  • Basic sentence structures
  • How to ask questions
  • How to make more complex sentences
  • Differences between Standard Written Chinese and Spoken Cantonese
  • Learn practical and expanded vocabulary through short stories
  • Conversation games to play with a group or your language partner
Projected release date: 2nd half of 2025
